Why You Might Want To Rethink Having That Corn On The Cob
There’s nothing like a good piece of corn on the cob at your summer bar-b-que or your buttered stovetop popcorn to go together with your favorite video, right? Or wrong?
This looks like it’s coming up more and more often…
Are corn and food products made out of corn allowable on the Diet Solution Program?
Well, the correct answer is yes, BUT here are a few details you need to understand first (you didn’t think I was simply going to leave it at that, did you?)
It’s been estimated that about 60% of the corn, now within the U.S., is genetically modified (though, I truly do imagine this number is larger now). The practice of genetically changing corn started in an effort to make corn crops resistant to certain pesticides. This can help the farmer because they are then able to grow a more substantial crop because it’s much easier to control pests (they are able to spray the crops with pesticide sprays and get rid of insects while not damaging their harvest).
Sweet corn has also been genetically altered (now known as Bt-corn) so that it creates a toxin which kills damaging pests. This means the farmer does not need to fight pests with insecticides.
Now even though some of these may sound like a positive thing (particularly if you’re a farmer!), we must look at precisely how GMO foods react inside our bodies and what sort of long term side effects they may have on our health and wellbeing.
Well, since the introduction of GMO food products is still relatively new, we’re in ways being used as “guinea pigs” in a massive experiment (Yikes!). In April 2007, Arpad Pusztai, from the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, UK, proclaimed that studies had shown intestinal modifications in rats due to feeding on genetically engineered potatoes (and I don’t know about you, but I’m not happy about anybody attempting to play around with my intestines).
This in reality doesn’t shock me. It’s astounding to me how many more people today complain of stuff like ibs along with other bothersome digestive problems. I’m not saying that eating GMO foods is the only cause of these types of disorders but I’m sure it’s a significant contributor (along with processed food products, but that’s a story for a different day).
Ok, so what if you’re able to get non-GMO corn? (Which usually it is difficult to know which brand names and goods are GMO and which aren’t) where does corn fit into your DSP meal plan?
First, your body reads corn as a grain, NOT a vegetable therefore if you are to incorporate it into your diet, this is going to be the grain (carbohydrate) for the meal. So having corn and brown rice would be having 2 grains in a single meal. This is not necessarily off limits and not “bad” by any means, just think about if you happen to be somebody that is sensitive to grains, you can shed weight faster by simply significantly decreasing the amount of grains you take in on a daily basis. You may want to take 2 – 3 weeks and keep to the “no grain” diet plans inside the Diet Solution guide to see if it can help break through any weight loss plateaus and/or aids the digestion.
How about microwave oven popcorn?
Well even the organic and natural kinds contain preservatives (of course to help keep them in the bag) and also have been shown to have the identical chemical coating inside the bag utilized on non-stick cooking equipment (double YIKES!). I’d personally stay clear of these things.
What about air popped popcorn?
This is your best choice and may certainly be utilized for an occasional snack. But notice I said “occasional”. Remember many people lose weight faster by simply lowering (not necessarily eliminating) many grains. Munching on popcorn everyday might and most likely will, impede your weight loss efforts.
I really hope this article helps you to make a much more knowledgeable choice at your next barbeque and at the next movie night. Remember, corn isn’t off limits by any means, just don’t forget you’re trying to find the non-GMO kinds and including it as a grain and never a vegetable into your current meals.
