Travelling to Alicante Airport

If you want to get to Alicante then you will probably travel through Alicante Airport. This is the biggest international airport in the region and located around 9km outside Alicante City. It’s actually located in Elche and is a very conveniently located airport. Most of the travellers to Murcia and Alicante will travel through this hotel, also people travelling to the Costa Blanca will also use this airport.

This is a big airport and is kept very cheap, the floors are marble and it’s quite impressive. It’s basically the same as any other airport in that it has its own shops, bars and of course restaurants. A large duty free shop is also in the terminal building.

Getting into the airport

The airport was opened to the public in 1967, however over the years it has grown an awful lot. Most of the people travelling to the Costa Blanca will travel through this airport, this means that around 9 million passengers fly into the airport every single year. To make things more confusing for airport staff, around 80% of this traffic is from international flights.

In recent years the airport has grown at an astounding rate, there are more people travelling into the airport each and every year. In order to satisfy the increasing number of passengers the airport is having a new terminal built, this will be open some time in 2009.

Flights will come to this airport from all corners of the world. A lot of flights actually come from England because this is a very popular tourist destination with British Tourists. High numbers of tourists also come from other European countries such as Holland and Germany.

Getting out of the Airport

Once you get to Alicante Airport there are actually quite a few different ways that you can travel to where it is you are going. The airport does not have a train, however there are a variety of different transportation options. The method of transportation you choose will depend on whether you want a hire car, and where it is you are staying.

There is an airport bus which travels to a number of different destinations all around Alicante. It’s actually quite cheap to get the bus to Alicante, and it takes around 40 minutes to get to the centre of the city. The bus runs from 8-11 and run approximately every 45 minutes. The buses are luxurious and have air conditioning.

If you’re staying in benidorm then there is also a bus to there, this will cost slightly more than the Alicante bus because it is a longer journey. It takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to get into Benidorm from Alicante airport. This is a new bus route and isn’t run as frequently as the Alicante bus. There are other bus routes available to Torrevieja, Denia and Calpe.

If you don’t want to go by bus then you can consider taking a taxi, this will also mean that you don’t have to wait around for a bus. Some taxi drivers can speak English, while others can only speak Spanish. Most taxi drivers are very helpful.
