Top Three Ways To Get More Stuff Done
1. Allocate A Limited Chunk Of Time For Consuming Info On The Web
Wasting hour after hour of your valuable and irreplaceable time on activities that shouldn’t take up more than 30 minutes a day has to come to an end.
I’m talking about everything on the Internet that you do to consume information – reading emails and messages, checking digg, Facebook and Twitter, reading blogs, the news – everything!
Give yourself 30 minutes to an hour every day to do nothing but delight in it, take care of it, or however you look at it. However, once you’ve used up your time, then you must not return to it at all until later in the day or evening, once you’ve accomplished all your other other tasks.
Stop these things from taking over your life by putting them in their place!
Give up checking this stuff every 15 minutes. Not only is that a momentum-killer, but chances are, the rest of the world isn’t going to sit at a standstill waiting on your next Facebook update.
2. Take Control Of Your Inbox
Managing your email is a massive topic, to the extent that a whole book could be written on this subject (there have been, many of them), but it is likely that these would be the most important points:
Answer any emails that can be replied to quickly (and by quickly, I mean in less than a couple of minutes) immediately.
Don’t make your replies any longer than they need be. Lose the ‘small talk’ and get to the point (but maintain sincerity). As much as you don’t like writing lengthy emails, the person receiving one probably likes reading them a lot less.
If you haven’t replied to any email after a month, then delete it. Holding on to them does nothing but make you feel guilty every time you open your inbox. Guilt is an action-killer, so get rid of the old emails and get rid of the guilt!
3. Stay Disconnected When You Work
This means, turn off your phone (you can do it, I know you can), close your instant messaging program, and close your office door (use a Do Not Disturb sign if necessary).
You have got to get momentum on your side, because when you get that ‘flow’ going, you are able to take action much faster, with greater results.
So, when you’re working, make sure you eliminate all distractions!
