Plastercine & Talcom Powder…Grown Men?

Why Do Grown Men Use Plastercine and Talcum Powder – To impression keys and to read the lever bellies and stop the plastercine sticking of course, as LASM reader Stuart Game and his friend Dave from the Locksmith Manchester Company discovered recently when he attended a one week lock opening course with Martin Newton of Safe Ventures.  Here is his Diary – Day one – started at around 0800 hrs with an overview of the week and what we were expected to get from it.

We had decided that pin tumbler impressioning and high security picking would be the focus for cylinder locks and the use of decoders and BS lock picking for lever locks.  Firstly, Martin got us to pick a three union lever lock with a two in one pick to see where our skills were at.  A few little tips and we moved on to the different ways to open this sort of lock and discussed each method in turn.  “ its all about the tension and the method”, Martin kept saying.  Then it was on to his lever manipulators and grouping the levers and looking for their heights in order to assist in choosing the correct tool.    We then moved onto 5 lever mortice locks and the use of the curtain pick.  Some good advice and tips were taught and the picking process was demo’d.  Off to the cafe for a spot of lucnh, with the topic of conversation still very much on locks. Old school? Possibly says the head locksmiths at Locksmith Manchester Company, and probably quite pointess – quicker and easier to change a lock nowadays.
