Newborn Nursery Bedding: Baby Bed Dependability is Vital

We are used to throwing away everything, but for some reason we want to keep our baby’s items forever. When you are pregnant, friends will offer to let you borrow their old nursery items and crib bedding. As baby rearing is very costly, one should be grateful for the baby bedding offered. Always make sure before you choose to use any bedding and crib for your child, that they are safe and won’t harm your child.

Whether it is a Moses basket or baby crib, there is something very special about your child’s first bed. If someone has been kind enough to give you their crib you will most likely want to clean it up and perhaps repaint it. It is a good idea to check the safety of the crib while you are in the process of refinishing it. Even new baby bedding and cribs should be checked for safety. If the cradle is of wicker, check up the joints and remove any loose things. The mattress must be replaced as it would have definitely become bad. Be careful that you do not have loose threads or pieces of material for the baby to shove into his or her mouth when fitting the skirt.

When choosing the drapes, it’s a very good idea to consider ones that can’t shed threads or pieces of material that the baby can grab or put in their mouth. The Juvenile Product Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in the USA and British Standards(BS) in the UK concerned about the safety of baby furnitures, warn that new furnitures and bedding should be bought for the crib if possible. Go in for JPMA or BS ‘KITE’ marked products. They are quite safe.

As for me, receiving products that were used before is perfectly fine when safety is not an issue and when the furniture is in food shape, even if it is baby bedding. Your baby will spend most of his time in his crib so it is important to check the type of crib you buy to ensure your baby’s safety and happiness. Here are some tips to bear in mind when assessing the safety of the equipment you have for your baby. The most important issue is that of paint, check for lead paint, and any chipped or peeling pieces and that the surface is smooth to the touch to prevent baby’s clothes from catching. Make sure you purchase a crib where the bars are extremely close together, (closer than 2 & 3/8 inches apart), and there are no holes anywhere, to protect your baby’s head. To prevent the child’s crib from shaking or wobbling, always be sure to check for tight joints and fixings. You should be certain that the raising and lowering mechanism for the side rail can be operated with just one hand, and that it stays securely in place when in the raised position. Last, the mattress should be clean and not too soft, and be sure that the side rail is no lower than 22 inches above the crib mattress.

I think it is important that each new baby should get a new mattress, but make sure the mattress fits well in the crib before buying. Nursery bedding may cause babies to suffocate, so you have to be careful to tie the strings of the bumper tightly or don’t use a bumper at all. Due to the danger of overheating, pillows, duvets, sheepskin or quilts should not ever be used for infants under one year of age. Blankets and sheets with a good thermometer in the babies room will help assure comfort. You will be astonished at a baby’s ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.

Please have a safe and enjoyable time with your infant, as they quickly mature.
