How To Choose A Bulldog Puppy
As if puppies aren’t cute enough, bulldog puppies have the awkward, wrinkly faces, disproportionately fat bodies, and those pointy ears that are impossible to resist. When buying a puppy, it takes a lot of self-control not to impulsively go for the first one you see. Instead, it takes a lot of consideration to choose a bulldog puppy which is healthy and that will make for a good addition to the home.
It’s important that the puppy’s previous owners have kept him or her in good health during the ownership. Inspecting the dog’s stomach will tell a lot about how it has been treated. It should be obvious that he or she was well-fed, but the stomach should not have protrusions or be distended. This may perhaps be an indication that the dog is suffering from parasitic worms in the stomach or intestines.
Next, it is important that the new owner and the puppy have compatible personalities. Obviously, it is important to make sure that the dog has an agreeable temperament and does not like to snap or bite. It should be approachable, not cowering. Cowering dogs can have other temperamental issues. Also, the new owner should decide if it is too cuddly or not cuddly enough, depending upon his or her preferences.
Choosing whether a female dog or male dog is the right option is important especially for buying bulldogs. In bulldogs, the opposite sexes have very different personalities in most cases. Male bulldogs tend to be more affectionate, playful, and loving with its owners and with other dogs. Female bulldogs, however, might be shyer and could possibly not enjoy physical affection as much.
Finally, new owners may or may not be aware of the condition called stenotic nares which tends to affect bulldogs. This is due to their wrinkly skin and their protruding jaws and could cause their nasal openings to be pinched or partially closed. If the puppy breathes very weakly or inaudibly, it could be suffering from this condition which could call for expensive surgery in the long run.
After all these things have been considered, you must simply choose a bulldog puppy that you think is the cutest! Having a puppy with an agreeable temperament and good health will mean gaining a new best friend. If there is any suspicion that the puppies you’re checking out are in poor health, it is important to ask the breeder about it or potentially call animal services to ensure the animal is being treated fairly.
