Alternate heating methods for hard pressed home owners

With the escalating costs of heating oil, propane and electricity it is only natural that cost conscious homeowners will investigate alternative forms of heat and power generation. There are many methods of alternative heating and power generation available to today’s homeowner. The actual location of the property and the most commonly available local fuels will usually indicate the most practical type of alternative heating to deploy in a home.

Alternative heating can drastically reduce home heating bills substantially and in some cases can eliminate bills completely. Alternative heating can also boost the value of your home sometimes by many times the heating season’s fuel bill saving. Some alternative heating methods can be carbon neutral and therefore benefit the environment in adition to reducing your costs. Installing alternate heating systems to your home can limit your exposure to world inflation and escalating fuel prices.

Other types of alternative heating commonly depend on burning fuel such as corn or wood pellets in corn burning stoves or wood stoves. It is worth noting that the price of corn will vary more greatly than wood as it is a world commodity. World market prices for shelled corn per bushel have varied between $2.50 and $7 in recent years. The price of corn in each locality is influenced by world commodity price and local supply. Wood pellet prices are usually a little more static. Where both fuels are easily available it is a wise choice to choose a dual fuel burner able to burn both wood and corn.

It is necessary to do some research before choosing an alternative heating method for your home and it could be worthwhile consulting local professional experts. As with any home improvements a well designed and installed system could add significant value to your home on resale.
